What is TMJ?
TMJ disorders are relatively common and can present in a variety of ways. Located in front of each ear, the two temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull. Any discomfort you feel while moving muscles for chewing can be a strong indication. Many unknowingly suffer from TMJ without realizing they have it and remain undiagnosed. So if you experience any associated symptoms, we urge you to call us at (707) 709-6058 for an examination. Let us determine if you suffer from TMJ and provide an appropriate treatment plan.
Poor posture and inappropriate diet are common causes of this disease. A lack of sleep and the disk in the joint may also be culprits. From the experience of our TMJ dentists, one of the earliest warning signs is clenching or grinding teeth during sleep. If you are experiencing an occasional headache or feeling discomfort, there is no need for immediate action. Instead, discuss your concerns at your next dental visit within a few months. However, if the pain is continuous or worsens over time, you should contact us as soon as possible at (707) 709-6058 for treatment.

What Happens in TMJ Treatment?
At Calistoga Dental Group, we recommend starting with the least invasive treatment. Massaging your jaw muscles a few times daily is an excellent place to begin. We can help you do this without adding strain to your jaw. Additionally, it's beneficial to evaluate your diet for foods that take quite a bit of chewing, like tough meats and nuts, which may worsen the problem. Replacing those items with softer foods or ones that can be pulled apart could lead to some immediate relief.
