A wisdom teeth extraction may become necessary at some point in your life. Unfortunately, it's rare for all four of these molars to fit comfortably, leading to an impacted growth that can cause discomfort and force other teeth forward. Moreover, it can also lead to an increased risk of infection and decay. That's why Calistoga Dental Group highly recommends our patients have their wisdom teeth removed. We will examine you and take X-rays before discussing if and when you should book the extraction procedure. If that interests you, give us a call at (707) 709-6058.

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Calistoga

As part of the procedure, you will receive anesthesia to numb the area to be worked on. Some dentists and oral surgeons may also offer nitrous oxide to help you relax or sleep so you do not recall the procedure.

Extracting your wisdom teeth is relatively simple and requires no surgery if appropriately aligned. In such cases, you can visit our dentist, who will use dental tools to pull out the tooth. However, if your teeth are impacted, you might need oral surgery for complete removal. This involves cutting open the gum tissue to access the tooth and creating a flap to view it; if muscle or bone is covering it, further cutting may be necessary. To extract the tooth, your dentist may grab and lift it from the socket; if this does not work, however, they may have to break it into smaller pieces for individual extraction.

Oral Care Post Wisdom Teeth Extraction

After a wisdom teeth extraction at Calistoga Dental Group, you will stay in our office until the anesthetic has taken effect. We suggest that patients prepare their home before coming to the appointment by having a comfortable bed ready with pillows. Calistoga dentists also recommend filling your nightstand with water bottles, additional gauze, ibuprofen, or things to distract you. Once you're home, rest for the following 48 hours.

During the first 24 to 48 hours, you should apply ice to your face for 15 minutes and take ibuprofen every hour. After this time, you may still need some ibuprofen, but icing may no longer be necessary. We might ask you to schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure you are healing correctly. During this visit, you will be cleared to resume regular eating habits.

Consult Us for Extracting Your Wisdom Teeth in Calistoga, CA

At Calistoga Dental Group, we recognize that patients have their reasons behind tooth extraction. Besides, our dentist conducts dental exams to study your teeth and extract wisdom teeth accordingly. For example, your third molars will remain in place if your palate has enough room for all your teeth. However, if growth is impacted, the tooth must be extracted to prevent trouble for other teeth, roots, and possible infection. To determine if wisdom teeth necessitate removal, call our Calistoga office at (707) 709-6058 for an examination.
